CATS AND OLIVES

A few days ago a friend who has a cat at home, told me that he liked olives. While olives are not harmful to cats, it is acceptable that they can eat one.

Olives have a substance that "reminds" them of pheromones. What the olive does - chemically - is stimulating for kittens.

We must be careful as there are many types of olives and additives that can be harmful to cats, such as vinegar or salt that can cause urinary problems.

The bones (pepas) of the olives produce stomach pains, as well as the area of the olive that is close to it, can obstruct the ways and cause a lot of damage to the cats.

HEAT HIT ON OUR CATS

A few days ago, we made a similar publication but dedicated to our canine friends. However, we could not leave out our little cats, so we share the information we have about the heat stroke in them.

The cat, like all animals, has thermoregulatory mechanisms to maintain a healthy temperature (for example, with saliva when licking). But, unlike people, however, cats do not sweat and it is more difficult to withstand strong changes in temperature.

When it is very hot, the cat can end its reserves of sugar and mineral salts; thus causing an internal collapse (heat stroke). If it is strong, the cat can die in less than 15 minutes.

Lack of water, lack of shade and soils that retain heat (such as cement floors) can make the situation worse.

And if in addition, the space in which it is is reduced or is poorly ventilated, the heat stroke can be easily fatal. Therefore it is important that, if it is very hot, do not leave the cat or 5 minutes closed in a car, the trasportín, a closed room.

Which cats are more prone to heat stroke?

Although it could be said that all cats can suffer a heat stroke, certain characteristics make it even more likely:

Ø Age is an influential factor in heat stroke: older cats an kitties are more likely to suffer it.

Ø Diseases. If the cat is weak due to some disease (heart or respiratory failure, stress, etc.), it will be more likely to suffer heat stroke.

Ø The activity of the cat can also be a conditioner, a cat that does a lot of exercise will increase its temperature more.

Ø Cats with short fur, like the Persian cat, are also more likely to suffer from these collapses.

Ø The color of the cat. As black retains more heat, the black cat is more prone to heat stroke.

Ø The weight of the cat. This is especially relevant in obese cats.

How to know if your cat is suffering a heat stroke? What are the symptoms?

The symptoms of cats that suffer heat stroke are usually:

Ø The cat has a lazy attitude and does not want to move (this is known as asthenia).

Ø Cat breathing is fast and / or difficult to breathe.

Ø The cat suffers from muscle tremors and / or vomiting.

Ø The mucous membranes of your gums change color (usually blue).

Ø The skin may turn blue due to lack of oxygen in the blood (this is known as cyanosis).

Ø Blood spots may appear on the skin (known as petechiae).

Ø The cat suffers an increased heart rate.

The cat can present one or several symptoms, so it is advisable to act at the least detail to avoid that the damage is irreversible.

What should we do in the face of heat stroke?

The best thing is that we take the cat to the vet, but since the heat stroke acts very quickly, it may not give us time.

In that case, the steps to follow are:

1. Take the cat to a cool place. To prevent the temperature from rising further.

2. Apply cold in the most important areas of the cat (head, neck, groin and armpits). In this way the blood that goes to the brain is refreshed, possible brain damage is avoided and it helps to lower the speed of breathing.

3. Put the cat under a jet of water (not too cold or too powerful). Moisten your mouth with water, but do not force him to drink.

4. Remove the cat from under the stream of water when you see that the breathing has normalized.

5. Always keep the temperature control of the cat (for example by putting it on a wet towel, but not wrapped).

6. In case we need to accelerate the drop in temperature, we can help with a fan or placing ice cubes on the nose, armpits and the sides of the neck.

And when you have managed to stabilize the cat, take it to the veterinarian to check that everything is fine and that the heat stroke has not caused sequelae in the pussycat.

What should you NOT do in the face of heat stroke?

In addition to the obvious, such as not causing more heat in the cat, it is important that:

 Do not force the cat to drink, it may not be able to swallow and it could drown.

 Do not cover it with towels or blankets, because the heat goes up instead of going down.

 Do not use ice water or strong power, because it could drown and we could damage your brain.

How to prevent hyperthermia or heat stroke?

To avoid having to go through the bad time (the cat and us), it is best to follow these tips that help reduce the risk of the cat suffering a heat stroke:

 Make fresh water available to the cat on a regular basis. It is better that they be few amounts of fresh water, and that we renew them.

 Do not leave the cat locked in small spaces like the car, a small and poorly ventilated room, etc.

 Do not let the cat do a lot of exercise under the sun or in very hot weather.

 If the cat has access to the outside, make sure you have places to protect yourself from the sun.

 It is better for the cat to eat at the first or last hour of the day, to avoid digestion in very hot hours.

As I always suggest, if we want to know more about this topic, let's consult our best friends: veterinarians.

HEAT HIT ON OUR DOGS

During the spring and summer seasons we enjoy sunny and hot days, which invite us to visit beaches, swimming pools or go on field days, many times and due to our ignorance, we take our dogs with us thinking that they can have a nice time, without knowing that we can expose them to serious danger.

The heat affects our dogs, much more quickly than humans. It is very important to be aware of it, since what seems to us 'a little moment' can be fatal for them. We must know that its mechanism to deal with sudden temperature changes is different from ours and is not as effective.

Dogs eliminate heat in several ways: panting (through breathing), sweating (unlike humans, we sweat throughout the body, they only do so through the pads of the legs and through areas that they have little hair like the belly (when lying on fresh surfaces is precisely to release heat by conduction).

Heat shock or hyperthermia affects older dogs and puppies more.

If, in addition, our dog has some heart disease, it is essential to take care of him and avoid risks because they tend to have losses with heats and if his prognosis is regular, the result will be even more serious, if not fatal.

The first symptoms not serious would be dizziness, much panting, weakness, apathy ... From there, the severe symptoms are shock and fainting.

How to avoid heat shocks:

• Do not take your dog for a walk in the middle of the day on hot days. Better in the morning or with the sundown. This is very important, because it seems that we find it more pleasant to take a bit of sun. Remember, not everything that we humans like is beneficial to our pets

• Make sure your dog always has fresh water available. If you are outside, try to enable a shaded and cool area.

• If you go hiking with him and it is very hot, try to walk in the shade and offer water often.

• Never leave your dog locked in the car in the supermarket parking lot when you go shopping. Sometimes we entertain ourselves more than we realize and forget that our beloved pet is in the car. The heat that accumulates in the car without any ventilation must be added the anxiety that causes them to be locked in alone, which can increase the symptoms of heat stroke.

What to do to face a heat stroke?

If you do not have time to go to the emergency room immediately, these tips can be very useful at first. But, undoubtedly, if you think your dog has had a heat stroke you should go to the vet as soon as possible.

  • The most important thing is to cool the dog so that its temperature drops to 39ºC.
  • If you were in a car or somewhere closed where the temperature is high, move your dog as soon as possible to an area where it is less hot, in the shade.
  • Wet it with fresh water, never with ice water. You can refresh it by passing wet towels on the feet, on the body, on the neck, around the head ... But do not cover it completely with them.
  • Fan it
  • Moisten the mouth but do not force him to drink.
  • Massage the lower part of the extremities to promote circulation.

If you breathe well, recover and seem to be better do not hesitate: the vet.

WHAT TO DO IN THE EVENT THAT OUR MASCOT IS BEING ASFIXED?

We always take care of our four-legged cocks, we are careful with their diet, we are aware of their vaccines and health, we take them for a walk, we dress them, we bathe them, we give them love ...

But what we sometimes do not know is what to do in case of emergency, in those cases where our pets, by curious or naughty, can swallow strange objects that they find there and begin to suffocate. We do not have enough time to get to the vet and we must act quickly because our life depends on our reaction ...

Here are some pictures that can help us, but there is nothing better than based on this, we consult with our veterinary friends and they instruct us on how to do it correctly.

We must always have knowledge of first aid for our pets ... better to know and not use it, than to need it and not know

HOW OUR DOGS RECEIVE US

Many times we have come back home tired, bored of traffic, stressed by the pressure of work or when we leave home by work or study, and suddenly we open the door, and as a tornado someone receive us, jumps, barks, screams, spins around ... our dog.

I have a six-year-old schnauzer toy called Otto, who from the first day until now, every time we get home, my daughter or me, first he jumps and barks constantly as a complaint "you arrived, you arrived, I'm not alone anymore , Yupi ". If you do not give him the attention he wants, he immediately starts spinning around as he chases his tail (which he does not have !!) and barking constantly. We know that we should bend down, hug him and allow him to give us kisses (wash our face with his tongue). That's the protocol that Otto follows when we both arrive, my daughter and I, whether we arrive together or separately, takes time with each one of us. Who can resist the enthusiasm with which he receives us?

Now I would like very much if you share with me the way your four-legged cocky welcomes you (if you have a video ... super !!! Hang it out to meet him). I found a video of some of the particular ways they have to receive their owners, I hope you enjoy it

UVAS Y PASAS (Parte Final)

¿Qué debo hacer si mi perro come uvas o pasas?

No pierda tiempo.

GRAPES AND RAISINS (Final Part)

Continuing with this theme, we have some questions that we could do:

How much should our dog eat to have an effect? What is the toxic dose?

Because raisins are dry and therefore more concentrated than grapes, they seem to be relatively more toxic than grapes. According to the Merck Veterinary Manual, the estimated toxic dose of grapes is 32 grams of grapes per kilogram of body weight and for raisins is 11-30 grams / kg.

There have also been cases where our dogs have eaten grapes or raisins and nothing happened to them. What is the cause of that? How can it be?

Although grapes are toxic to dogs, it doesn’t seem to affect everyone equally, and there would be a percentage of dogs "immune" to the toxic raisins and grapes.

However, as we do not know if our dog is one of the "lucky ones", as a precaution, we mustn’t give them grapes or raisins as a reward or part of their diet, and try to keep them out of reach.

The latter is very important, since poisoning by grapes and raisins in dogs often occurs carelessly, when an owner leaves a bag of raisins or grapes on the table or in another place that the dog can access.

What should I do if my dog eats grapes or raisins?

If we believe our pet ate grapes or raisins, please contact a vet immediately. We shouldn’t waste time. Since there are still many unknowns related to this toxicity, it is best not to take risks when it comes to the health of our cocky.

However, for knowledge we can detail some of the symptoms that dogs could present when they have consumed grapes or raisins:

The first effects are presented shortly after consuming the fruit, we will watch our dog throw up (within the first 2 hours after consumed).

Within 5 to 6 hours after consuming the grapes, we will notice our pet entering a state of lethargy, and is very thirsty and have diarrhea.

The second stage of the symptoms of grape consumption in dogs occurs after 24 hours, or even several days later, and the renal failure will begin to occur.

Among the symptoms that are when the kidney failure in our dog begins, we can recognize:

Abdominal pains
Loss of appetite
Depression
More vomiting
Tremors
Decreased frequency of dog urination
Decreased urine output

In summary, we must be alert to the possibility that our four-legged cocky eat some food that is harmful to them. If it happened, our best friends, vets support us in order to face these eventualities.

UVAS Y PASAS (PARTE I)

GRAPES AND RAISINS (Part I)

Feeding our pets is very important so we should consider for them, as for us, a diet rich in minerals, proteins, vitamins and many more nutrients. With dogs, particularly, we must take a much stricter care, since many of the foods that for us are healthy, can cause them adverse effects, resulting in their toxic intake.

Grapes for example, are one of these foods that we should not give to our dog, in addition to other fruits and vegetables that also cause negative effects on your health.

But this time, we will talk about grapes and raisins.

The grapes, in addition to being delicious, provide a great variety of nutrients for humans, including vitamins A, B, C and E, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, potassium and zinc. However, there is another substance in this fruit, which is still unknown and in humans has no effect, but in dogs is very toxic.

It is not clear whether this is a new problem, or whether the toxic nature of grapes and raisins came to be recognized after the establishment of a database on toxic food in animals about 25 years ago. In any case, the number of cases identified with illness or death in dogs after eating raisins or grapes is increasing.

When a dog consumes grapes, that toxic substance causes a malfunction in their kidneys, starting as a metabolic disturbance that produces gastrointestinal discomfort which then translates into acute renal failure.

The toxic effect of grapes is not something characteristic of any particular species of this fruit, but can be observed in each of them, occurring in the varieties of grapes without seed, seeds, homegrown or commercial fruits, As well as in raisins. Therefore, we must be very careful that our cocky consumes this fruit.

For safety, we should not feed our dog:

Neither fresh grapes nor raisins
Panettone, cookies, cakes or biscuits containing raisins
Assorted nuts containing raisins

ALLERGIES IN DOG (FINAL)

To finish, for the moment, with the subject, we detail some information about the origin of the allergy to try to avoid it.

Allergies in dogs of alimentary origin
These allergies are the most common. There are more and more dogs that present intolerances to certain components used in commercial feed, as well as a certain fruit or vegetable.

Obviously it will be our vet who best advises us on what I think we should use and how to use it. Alternatively, you may be asked to perform an allergic test to our dog through a blood test, which will indicate or give us some clue as to which food is allergic.

Allergies in dogs by contact
There are many plants that can cause allergy to a dog, just like humans. The strangest cases of allergies are the environmental ones, which provoke this reaction in our dog but are extremely complicated to detect.

Some dogs are allergic to grass, something very simple to detect since every time you play or walk on grassy ground, you will see a lot of allergic symptoms.

But also other plants, less frequent or only grow during certain months of the year, can be the cause of allergy. And obviously these will be much more difficult to detect

On the other hand, there are allergies to the contact of insects or parasites, or to their bite. Fleas for example can cause allergy to our dog, its sting means that the parasite leaves some saliva on the skin of our dog that can cause allergy, like their feces.

The bite of a spider can also be cause for an allergy, just like that of a tick. There are hundreds of insects capable of causing allergies to our dogs. That is why preventing at least certain parasites with the use of necklaces or pipettes, is a success.

Allergies in dogs by inhalation
This type of allergies are very common in humans, especially in spring when thousands of floral species release their pollen. The same thing happens to our dogs, they can be victims of inhalation allergies of grasses or pollen.

Although they are not the only cause of allergies, tobacco smoke, car smoke or certain chemicals such as lacquers, insecticides (even those that are plugged in), or pollution in general ... can be the cause of an allergic reaction .

After this brief explanation, one of the most common questions that we have is: Do allergies last forever in our puppies?

This will depend on each can and its allergy. Some require a lifetime treatment and others are only seasonal.

For example a chicken allergy (food allergy) will probably be for life and although it does not require any special medication, obviously our dog will never be able to eat chicken.

On the other hand, an allergy to mites, pollen or some chemical present in the environment can be continued and require medication for long periods of time, even on occasions for life.

We insist that the best solution to an allergy is to go to vet to perform the appropriate tests. He will be able to detect the origin of the allergy and indicate the necessary steps to prevent it, as well as provide us with the precise medicines to avoid complications in the health of our dog.
