UVAS Y PASAS (PARTE I)

GRAPES AND RAISINS (Part I)

Feeding our pets is very important so we should consider for them, as for us, a diet rich in minerals, proteins, vitamins and many more nutrients. With dogs, particularly, we must take a much stricter care, since many of the foods that for us are healthy, can cause them adverse effects, resulting in their toxic intake.

Grapes for example, are one of these foods that we should not give to our dog, in addition to other fruits and vegetables that also cause negative effects on your health.

But this time, we will talk about grapes and raisins.

The grapes, in addition to being delicious, provide a great variety of nutrients for humans, including vitamins A, B, C and E, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, potassium and zinc. However, there is another substance in this fruit, which is still unknown and in humans has no effect, but in dogs is very toxic.

It is not clear whether this is a new problem, or whether the toxic nature of grapes and raisins came to be recognized after the establishment of a database on toxic food in animals about 25 years ago. In any case, the number of cases identified with illness or death in dogs after eating raisins or grapes is increasing.

When a dog consumes grapes, that toxic substance causes a malfunction in their kidneys, starting as a metabolic disturbance that produces gastrointestinal discomfort which then translates into acute renal failure.

The toxic effect of grapes is not something characteristic of any particular species of this fruit, but can be observed in each of them, occurring in the varieties of grapes without seed, seeds, homegrown or commercial fruits, As well as in raisins. Therefore, we must be very careful that our cocky consumes this fruit.

For safety, we should not feed our dog:

Neither fresh grapes nor raisins
Panettone, cookies, cakes or biscuits containing raisins
Assorted nuts containing raisins

ALLERGIES IN DOG (FINAL)

To finish, for the moment, with the subject, we detail some information about the origin of the allergy to try to avoid it.

Allergies in dogs of alimentary origin
These allergies are the most common. There are more and more dogs that present intolerances to certain components used in commercial feed, as well as a certain fruit or vegetable.

Obviously it will be our vet who best advises us on what I think we should use and how to use it. Alternatively, you may be asked to perform an allergic test to our dog through a blood test, which will indicate or give us some clue as to which food is allergic.

Allergies in dogs by contact
There are many plants that can cause allergy to a dog, just like humans. The strangest cases of allergies are the environmental ones, which provoke this reaction in our dog but are extremely complicated to detect.

Some dogs are allergic to grass, something very simple to detect since every time you play or walk on grassy ground, you will see a lot of allergic symptoms.

But also other plants, less frequent or only grow during certain months of the year, can be the cause of allergy. And obviously these will be much more difficult to detect

On the other hand, there are allergies to the contact of insects or parasites, or to their bite. Fleas for example can cause allergy to our dog, its sting means that the parasite leaves some saliva on the skin of our dog that can cause allergy, like their feces.

The bite of a spider can also be cause for an allergy, just like that of a tick. There are hundreds of insects capable of causing allergies to our dogs. That is why preventing at least certain parasites with the use of necklaces or pipettes, is a success.

Allergies in dogs by inhalation
This type of allergies are very common in humans, especially in spring when thousands of floral species release their pollen. The same thing happens to our dogs, they can be victims of inhalation allergies of grasses or pollen.

Although they are not the only cause of allergies, tobacco smoke, car smoke or certain chemicals such as lacquers, insecticides (even those that are plugged in), or pollution in general ... can be the cause of an allergic reaction .

After this brief explanation, one of the most common questions that we have is: Do allergies last forever in our puppies?

This will depend on each can and its allergy. Some require a lifetime treatment and others are only seasonal.

For example a chicken allergy (food allergy) will probably be for life and although it does not require any special medication, obviously our dog will never be able to eat chicken.

On the other hand, an allergy to mites, pollen or some chemical present in the environment can be continued and require medication for long periods of time, even on occasions for life.

We insist that the best solution to an allergy is to go to vet to perform the appropriate tests. He will be able to detect the origin of the allergy and indicate the necessary steps to prevent it, as well as provide us with the precise medicines to avoid complications in the health of our dog.

ALLERGIES IN DOGS (II PART)

In order to continue talking about allergies in dogs, is important to know main causes. The most common causes are divided in three groups:

· Food allergies: Caused by feeding our dogs with some products that contains an allergen

· Contact allergies: Caused when our dogs are in touch with some insect or plant the produces allergy, or any bite. Also by being in contact with certains chemical products that we have at home or maybe by using some kinds of shampoo that contains that product.

· Inhalation allergies: Caused, like happened with humans, inhale some particles, substance or pollen.

As we comment in first publication, we should not pretend to be a specialist and try to heal our pets. It’s our duty go to a vet, who examines and prescribes the ideal treatment for them. We insist that the allergy can not be healed by a domestic medicine nor listening comments about the subject.

A non assist allergy can get worse in a short time, causing, inclusive the death of our dog. It is not a joke, our dog can be examined and diagnosed by a vet, who prescribes the ideal treatment according its weigth, symptomatology and how serious is the illness.

Our dogs and ourselves best friend is a vet. We should not have doubts to get in touch with him.

ALERGIAS EN LOS PERROS (Parte I)

ALLERGIES IN DOGS (Part I)

Many of us have wondered if our dog is allergic or how to know if it is ...

I own a schnauzer toy (which I presented in the first publications) that is extremely allergic, especially to the preservatives found in some products that are sold in the supermarkets. Which is why I learned how to make your feed. Otto, my schnauzer, was diagnosed from an early age so I could help him in his diet. Today he is an incredibly dog that will turn 8 and although his allergy has sometimes difficult moments, he has been able to get ahead.

Now let's identify together the main symptoms produced by allergies in dogs and what we can do to solve the problem.

First of all, we must know what an allergy is: It’s a response of our dog's immune system to a foreign element in his body called Allergen. This response of the immune system is what causes the symptoms that we can detect in our dog, which will tell us that we are facing an allergy in dogs.

The main symptoms in dogs with some type of allergy are:

· Irritation or redness of the skin: Our dog may have skin problems, practically anywhere, but especially between the "fingers" and pads of the legs, as well as in the inner part of the ears that take a reddish tone.
· Rashes and sores: Anywhere, but usually in the abdomen, legs and ears.
· Inflammation: Small or large lumps in the body of our dog, uniquely or in small inflammation groups.
· Shaking and / or sneezing: Our dog will shake excessively his body or head, a symptom that something bothers him. Allergy can also cause an excess of sneezing in our dog.
· Vomiting and diarrhea: It is completely normal for our dog to have vomiting and / or intestinal maladjustments. Sometimes accompanied by weight loss and / or appetite, weakness and discouragement.
· Hair loss: Excessive hair loss and appearance of small or large hives on your body.
· Swollen or reddened eyes: If the area around the eye is red or rash, the eye is inflamed or crying, it may be a clear symptom of an allergy.

These are some symptoms that may present, but like us humans, each can have other manifestations of an allergy or any other disease.

So we should not try to solve the problem ourselves, we should go to a specialist, who will review, analyze and confirm a diagnosis for our pet and prescribe the appropriate drugs, since allergies usually do not go away on their own.

Patatas o papas verdes y crudas

HARMFUL FOODS FOR OUR DOGS
We, as owners, usually ask ourselves what are the foods, in this case vegetables, that our cocky four-legged, can consume or which are harmful to them.

Here are some of the vegetables we should NOT give you with a brief explanation:

Onions and garlic
These foods in addition to leeks, chives, etc ... contain thiosulfate, which destroy cannabis blood cells and cause anemia. They can also cause lethargy, tachycardia, hyperventilation, pale gums and in severe cases, respiratory collapse.

Mushrooms
Some mushrooms are toxic to dogs (as humans are) so it is necessary to look out our pet when we take a walk through parks or gardens.

Green potatoes
Potatoes are ingredients of several dog foods. However, what makes our dogs ill is to consume potatoes  that are not well cooked or green (immature) as they can cause nausea, vomiting and even convulsions.

Rhubarb
This vegetable is not suitable for our canine friend; Their leaves and stems reduce the level of calcium in the body of dogs, which can lead to kidney failure.

So if you realize that your dog may have ingested any of these foods, do not hesitate to take him to the vet, preferably identifying what he has eaten, thus facilitating the work of the specialist for its treatment.

Remember that not everything that is healthy for us, it is for our dogs.

Cats and celery

Talking days ago with a friend, who like me has dog and cat (knowing that this page is dedicated to both specimens), he told me that his cat had been digging through the vegetables and had a special interest in celery.

Cats, according to my experience, are one of the most careful animals with their feeding, they instinctively indentify which vegetables they should and should not eat. However, and in order to clear my doubts, I decided to investigate more about celery and feline food.

The addition of celery to the diet of cats is perfectly safe. We should only be careful not to unbalance your overall diet by feeding them too much, or by substituting their normal food.

Celery is rich in vitamins and also contains fiber, all of which are worthwhile supplements to your cats diet.

Celery also has diuretic properties. In essence the consumption of celery can help flush out the system and aid liver function.

A small amount of celery will also help stimulate appetite. And if your cat is suffering from a little digestive upset, some celery can help ease the pain by settling the stomach.

However, we should remember that cats are carnivores. This means that, they do not have a need for vegetables and fruits as we do. In many cases cats are able to get those missing nutrients from the prey they eat, and in the case of fully domesticated cats, from the balanced cat food we buy.

So, if your cat wants to eat celery, it's beacuse it needs it. Always we must be careful with the amount.

FELIZ DIA DE LAS MAMIS!!!!

Queridas mamitas ...
